Project Martha

Project Martha

Project Martha supports women whose lives are shaped by family responsibilities, caregiving, unpaid labour, and daily economic pressures.

We recognise women as central contributors to household stability, community resilience, and social development, while addressing the structural barriers that limit their safety, dignity, and economic independence.

The name Martha refers to Martha of Bethany, a biblical figure of responsibility, service, resilience, and moral courage. Through this project, the community recognises and honours women who sustain families and communities through their work, care, and perseverance, while affirming that their lives, service, and dignity carry lasting value and blessing.

About Project

Project Overview

Project Martha responds to the need for structured, community-based economic support for women in Uganda, where family responsibilities, caregiving, unpaid labour and daily financial pressures continue to affect household stability, social participation and long-term resilience. The project recognises women as central contributors to family welfare, local development and social progress, while strengthening practical pathways that improve dignity, safety, income generation and economic independence.

As a pilot initiative in Uganda, Project Martha will establish a national model of women-centred support built on trusted community structures, congregation partnerships and micro-enterprise development. Slovak partners will mobilise resources and strengthen international solidarity, while Ugandan congregations will lead community outreach and identify women for participation.

Priority will be given to women who carry daily responsibility for children, households, elderly relatives and vulnerable family members and who often depend on informal work, small trade, agriculture, domestic production or irregular earnings. Targeted micro-enterprise assistance will help them develop reliable sources of income, meet essential household needs and plan beyond immediate survival. The initiative recognises the work, care and perseverance through which women sustain families and communities, while promoting financial responsibility, practical skills and peer support.

Implementation will extend across Uganda’s 146 districts through a congregation-based mobilisation framework covering every region of the country. Local congregations will use their knowledge of family circumstances, caregiving responsibilities and economic pressures to guide beneficiary selection and maintain contact with participating women. Slovak partner communities will contribute to the financial foundation required for the establishment of women-led enterprises.

The model will combine mobilisation, beneficiary selection, enterprise development, monitoring and accountability within a coordinated implementation system. Project coordination will oversee documentation, reporting and programme standards, while community-level structures will support regular follow-up and beneficiary progress. This arrangement will strengthen local ownership and create a clear mechanism for transforming international solidarity into measurable economic and social outcomes.

Through women’s economic participation, community-led poverty reduction and improved household resilience, the initiative will contribute to broader development priorities and the principle of reaching those furthest first. It will connect financial support with local leadership and direct assistance, enabling women to build livelihoods that strengthen family stability and social inclusion.

The Uganda pilot will allow NAMBI FOUNDATION to develop and test a replicable model grounded in participation, faith-based solidarity and development-oriented action. Its results will demonstrate how congregations, communities and civil society can work together to expand women’s economic opportunities across Uganda and provide a foundation for future implementation in other countries.
